Johnny Damon sparked the Yankees in a ninth inning rally with two outs as the Yankees took a 3-1 lead in the World Series and defeated the Phillies 7-4 on Sunday night in Philadelphia at Citizens Bank Park.Brad Lidge may be known as “Lights Out” Lidge but last night Mariano “Lights Out” Rivera was the one who turned the lights out in Citizens Bank Park last night with his eight pitch ninth inning in the 7-4 win by the Yankees over the current world champion Phillies. The Yankees took a two run lead in the first inning but the Phillies countered with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame making the score 2-1 on a Chase Utley double.

Pedro Feliz singled in the fourth inning to tie the score at 2-2.Yankees Take 4-2 LeadThe next inning the Yankees scored two more runs on singles by Derek Jeter and Johnny Damon giving the Yankees a 4-2 lead.Utley homered in the seventh to close the gap to 4-3. Then Pedro Feliz homered in the eighth to tie the score at 4-4.Lidge One Out From Keeping Score TiedLidge entered the game and seemed on the verge of keeping the score tied with two outs when Johnny Damon singled and later stole second and third base on same play when the Phillies had nobody covering third base.It was odd that Feliz would be covering second base when Carlos Ruiz threw to second base in an attempt to throw out Damon at second base. For some inexplicable reason neither Jimmy Rollins or Chase Utley were covering second for the throw and Rollins should have been between Damon and third base.Lidge UnravelsNone of that really mattered though since Mark Teixeira was hit by Lidge and Alex Rodriguez doubled to left field to score Damon who still would have scored if he was still on second base and gave the Yankees a 4-3 lead. Lidge unraveled after Damon stole second and third base.Jorge Posada then hit a two run double that scored Teixeira and Rodriguez but was thrown out at second ending the inning with the Yankees ahead 7-4.The Phillies would have been facing Phil Coke in the bottom of the ninth inning but when the Yankees took the lead Rivera was brought in to seal the win.Chamberlain blew the save in the eighth inning but notched a win with the three runs scored by the Yankees in the top of the ninth inning.Game Notes: C.C. Sabathia pitched well for being on three days rest and would have won the game if not for the Feliz homer given up by Joba Chamberlain in the eighth inning.Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth and Raul Ibanez were 1-11 and combined to personally leave nine runners on base….Mariano Rivera has only given up four runs in 34 World Series innings for a 1.04 ERA.
